Do antiobiotics really make birth control pills ineffective? Does drinking while taking antibiotics make the treatment not work?

I actually asked my doctor this once. She told me that antibiotics CAN (but don't always) make birth control pills ineffective, and thus, my partner and I should play it safe by using a second form of contraception while I'm on meds. I've taken her advice because I certainly don't want a mini-me running around quite yet. But you should definitely speak with your doctor. Would hate to be the reason if anything went wrong.

I've too also wondered about alcohol and antibiotics…

This is actually NOT true. Most antibiotics do not interfere with the pill. Visit this link for information on medicines that will interfere( http://www.plannedparenthood.org/sexual-health/ask-dr-cullins/ask-dr-cul...) As always if you are afraid, just use a condom in addition to the pill. You however are very correct about your concern about alcohol. Alcohol will cause your body to metabolize the antibiotic less efficiently. Also the alcohol will weaken your immune system which is helping you get better.
