Low-Maintenance Pets that Won’t Break the Bank

You’ve graduated from college. Maybe you’ve got an apartment, a job, the works. But something is still missing, and that thing may very well be a pet.

You may be thinking, “I can barely take care of myself, let alone nurture a young animal.” This is responsible thinking. Well done. We’re not suggesting you invest in a thoroughbred, but that doesn’t mean you have to rule out pets altogether. They’re not all as expensive and demanding as you might think, and the benefits are many.

The reptile-rodent-fish triumvirate is a good place to start, but let’s take it to the next level. We present our list of the four most low-maintenance pets in order of easiness and affordability.

4. Goldfish: If you can’t manage to win one at a carnival, you can find one at any pet store. Get a bowl, put some water in it, feed him or her once in a while, et voila! You have a pet and a nice decorative touch.

3. A Cricket. Get one, make a little house for it out of Tupperware, and relax as it chirps you to sleep. Available at pet stores or by mail. If this excites you, it's time to read about caring for crickets.

2. Sea Monkeys. Ok, so they’re actually brine shrimp. But they are as playful as a pack of monkeys once they “magically” come to life after having lived in a freeze-dried state of “suspended animation” for many years. If you’ve never had the pleasure of raising your own brood, now is the time. The traditional "Ocean Zoo" is available online and at various museum gift shops.

1. Pet Rock. This is one ‘70s fad that merits a revival. Find a rock, make a “nest” for it, and enjoy.

Furnishing Your Apartment

I never thought I’d miss my college dorm room furniture until, staring into the barren, white-walled expanse of my first apartment, I truly realized that it was gone. Overwhelmed by the emptiness of it all (well, all three rooms of it), I had a sudden distorted nostalgia for all those university-issued fixtures: Blonde-wood dressers and their perpetually dislocating drawers. An unyielding love seat with a penchant for inducing back spasms. My twin-sized plastic mattress that buckled under the weight of even the tamest sex act. It's not that I actually liked these furnishings (or the Soviet-era design sense they evoked). But faced with the prospect of buying everything from scratch, they seemed, well, homey.

Thankfully, bolstered by advice from my apartment-dwelling friends, some help from family, and a lot of scrupulous bargain hunting, I successfully pieced together a fully furnished apartment (for a reasonable price) within a month of signing my first lease. Best of all, I banished dorm room furniture to my distant memory. Here are a few guidelines to help apartment newbs do the same.

Before You Buy

Measure Everything

Before you start filling the pad with furniture, bust out that tape measure and draft an accurate floor plan of your apartment. Take especially careful measurements of hallways, stairs, and elevators, as well as any turns in your new building’s staircase in case you have to haul large pieces of furniture up to a fourth-story walk-up. Once you know the dimensions, use this handy Arrange-a-Room tool for ideas on how to set everything up.

Trick of the Eye

Very few first apartments are mansion-sized. Most recent college grads (myself included) have to make the most that they can with little space. Here are tips for making that small pad seem larger:

Choose space-efficient furniture that has more than one use. A futon or pull-out couch can comfortably accommodate a couple of sedentary butts vegging out in front of the TV, as well as double as a guest bed. In the dining room, save space with a drop-leaf table and some classy-looking collapsible chairs that fold up when there’s no beer pong or poker going on.

Don't overbuy. Even the most spacious apartment can quickly become cramped with too much furniture, so try not to go overboard and stick to the basics.

Anchor a room with simple, neutral-toned pieces. Besides making your space look bigger, they'll allow you to make bolder choices with artwork, wall coverings, and accessories.

Decide on a Décor Style

Your new pad may not be worthy of the pages interior design mags like Domino, Home, or Martha Stewart Living (which are great places to troll for design ideas, by the way), but it should still reflect your personal tastes and style. Maybe you want the sleek, minimalist look of assemble-it-yourself pieces from Ikea, or an eclectic collection of flea market finds. Either way, choose a décor style and run with it. Where to Get It

Keep It in the Family

At height of my furniture-less frenzy, I turned to my folks for “help” (i.e., money). What they gave me was, surprisingly, even better than Benjamins: I got to take home my grandmother’s vintage bedroom set, which, unbeknownst to me, had been collecting dust for years in a storage unit.

Think Locally

For great deals on all kinds of gently used home goods, stop in at the closest Salvation Army and Goodwill, both of which often carry full furniture sets. Garage sales and flea markets are also good places to scout for that odd or unique piece.

Take It to the Street

You know what they say: one person’s trash is another person’s sweet street find. Perfectly good used furniture gets chucked every day, but it’s not always easy to come across. To narrow down the search, contact the local sanitation department to find out the trash pick-up schedule for our neighborhood, or an area worth exploring—if there’s any good furniture to find, it’ll usually get dragged out for pick-up the night before or morning of. Word of wisdon: often those street, attic, or thrift store finds are in need of a serious overhaul. But don’t pass on a piece just because it needs some work. Domino has all the steps to guide you to glory. Also, remember that sometimes a simple slipcover over a used couch will do the trick.

Shop Online

These days, everything is cheaper online, and furniture is no exception. Besides Craigslist and eBay, there are great deals to be had at discount websites like Overstock.com. Also, many big brick-and-mortar stores—like Macy’s, Pier One Imports, and West Elm, for example—offer exclusive, online-only sales. Some even have separate discount-oriented spin-off sites or online outlets, like Crate and Barrel’s CB2.

Scratch and Dent

Almost every furniture store sells their floor models and “slightly damaged” goods for a fraction of the cost. It’s not like carrying a knock-off Louis Vuitton or anything—you still get the name brand, just with a little blemish.

The Next Level: DIY

Can’t find that specific fixture, or just plain sick of shopping for furniture? Then consider building your own stock from scratch. Site likes Lifehacker, the chick-oriented Be Jane, and DIY Network are chock-full of instructional articles and weekend projects to guide novice builders through constructing their dream pieces.

The Best and Worst Cities to Look for a Job

Barack Obama said he would create more jobs, and he's lived up to his promise—at least in his new hometown. According to a study on the Best and Worst Cities to Look for a Job, Washington D.C. is a job-hunter's heaven, with six job postings for every unemployed person. (I guess the government sector really is booming!)

Not surprisingly, Detroit wallows at the bottom of the list, with 18 unemployed folks grappling for each listing. Hartford comes in at #7 (1 posting : 2 seekers), but as an ex-Hartford resident, I can't in good conscience recommend moving there!

Needless to say, follow up questions abound. Most notably, how many recent grads are legitimately counted amongst these "unemployed" and how many of these postings are even relevant to them? And how many people per job posting suffer from poverexia?

Still, if you're deciding where to move, it might be worth cross-referencing this list with Gradspot's Top 10 Cities for Recent Grads and going from there. It beats throwing darts at a map of the United States.

One of the most liberating realizations of recent grad-dom is that as soon as you leave campus, you are free to look for a job anywhere in the country—or just move to a new city without one if you’ve got the gumption. Of course, your decision about where to settle down (at least temporarily) after graduation will be complicated by a number of "x-factors," like where your boyfriend or girlfriend lives, how much of a mama’s boy/girl you are, and what you can afford. But there’s also something to be said for taking a risk on a town that appeals to your gut instinct, or one that serves as a hub for the industry you want to join.

Note: Needless to say, rental prices vary drastically within cities. We have provided the average monthly cost of a one-bedroom apartment in each city to serve as a quick barometer of the housing market/cost of living. However, there are a ton of factors that influence this number, so take into account the context. For example, a one-bedroom in New York will probably be a lot smaller than a one-bedroom in Atlanta or Houston, and in all cities costs vary significantly as you move between neighborhoods and/or share with roommates.

A sprawling metropolis with a southern swagger, ATL is where pop culture phenomena are made. Coca-Cola ships out its sweet elixir by the truckload, and music industry players (especially R&B and hip hop) scour clubs for the next big thing. Despite a slow, Southern pace of life, the city has plenty of ways to keep recent grads occupied at night, including bar-heavy Buckhead and lounge-heavy downtown. If you ever get bored, leaving town is an easy option—Savannah and Charleston are just a road-trip away, and Delta's Atlanta hub is the busiest airline hub in the world, offering (affordable) flights to almost anywhere.

If you're someone who needs open space, Denver is a great launching point for all sorts of outdoor activities, from hiking and biking to skiing and snowmobiling. But it's not just an oversized ski town. Big business, Coors Brewing Company, and the largest population of federal employees outside of Washington, D.C., all call the "Mile High City" home, and downtown Denver has seen successful revitalization efforts in recent years. On top of all that, it was the site of what was arguably the best season of Real World in recent memory, so you can't discount that.

If you like sports and fratty behavior, Beantown may be the place for you. With tons of history and a recent spate of championships, the town's sports teams drive the daily conversation, which generally involves the use of strange accents. Moreover, "America's College Town" is packed with students who populate the bars and/or drink terrible beers in dorm rooms throughout the city. Though not always the most vibrant of cities, Boston is very livable. There are some wonderful museums and historical sites, and few things beat a run or walk along the banks of the Charles River in spring.

Boston is an unreal city for a young person because it has a strong historical and cultural identity that the leveling effects of time and the inanities of popular culture can't change. What still counts is Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, Larry Legend, and all the Good Will Huntings at the local Dunkin' Donuts. The Pacific Northwest often gets a bad rap as a place where ugly, granola-eating freaks get rained on a lot, but those who live in Seattle have compelling evidence that it's a perfect city for recent grads. The surrounding area is beautiful, offering great skiing in the Cascade and Olympic Mountains, as well as tons of hiking, mountain biking, and mountaineering opportunities (there’s even a biking terrain park underneath the freeway). Tech geeks, beer nerds, and outdoors mavens live together amiably, chilling at the incredible REI flagship store and thinking about what it would be like if Kurt Cobain were still alive.

Sick of the hipsters in Brooklyn, Portland, and San Francisco? Seattle has a noticeable dearth of the long-haired, intentionally short-trousered type. And no, we aren't quite like the characters from Grey's Anatomy, either—much fewer monologues, and the ferry system (albeit an extensive one) typically only plays a role in the lives of retirees living a laid-back lifestyle on the islands of the Sound.

What we do have are a number of established, thoughtful neighborhoods, each with their own unique personality, as well as a real-estate bubble that is bursting a little slower than the rest of the nation. Our restaurants are dominated by prominent "big name" chefs; outside of Seattle, brewery and winery tours are a favorite weekend activity.

As for outdoor activities, any day of the year (the water temperature only changes by a few degrees from summer to winter), Seattleites can don a thick wetsuit and surf a three hour drive from the city. In the opposite direction, only an hour from Seattle, is Snoqualmie Pass, where skiing or snowboarding is possible until 10PM any night of the week during winter. — Andrea J.,

Ever the town for movers and shakers, DC is riding the wave of excitement ignited by the election of Barack Obama. It's often said the dynamics of the town shift according to who’s in office, particularly during the summer when the nation's capital is flooded with party-hardy interns. If you are coming from a large city, D.C. can feel comparatively small and segregated, but it is also rife with young people in politics, academia, and journalism (a plus for guys: women outnumber men by about 5 to 4).
